The Energy Cuff: cutting-edge generative design jewellery
The Energy cuff is the latest species from our lab where we explore new design tools like generative- and AI design for products. Besides our regular projects we’re always experimenting with new forms and solutions to serve the needs of our clients.
As designers, we love to play with high-tech tools and push them to their limits. Especially as in this case, generative design tools are revolutionizing the world and product designTools which open doors to design solutions our ancestors could only dream of.
Our expertise with these cutting-edge tools enables us to tackle diverse design challenges with unparalleled creativity and precision. A good example is this Energy cuff bracelet.
What is Generative design?
In generative design 3d shapes are generated from algorithms. Mathematical formulae which enable us to generate intriguing shapes which are nearly impossible to describe and achieve with conventional design techniques.
The designer conducting and manipulating algorithms
In generative design and AI the role of the designer can be compared to that of a musician who manipulates waves generated by computers such that synthesized music arises. A bit like a symphony, we conduct and manipulate an orchestra of shape generating algorithms to create sophisticated new (sculptural) forms, patterns and structures and solutions. Like we did with the Energy cuff.
Energy cuff 3D printed in wax, cast in silver
For the Energy cuff we used multiple algorithms to firstly develop the waving main shape, then added a natural flowing ‘water’ pattern on top of that. The design is 3D printed in wax and cast in silver, after which it is finished and polished by hand.
