FireFly agricultural Sensors for Quantified Technology
Enhancing brand value through design
Enhancing brand value through design
Breathing quality and authority through design
The FireFly was their first product. How do you attract attention as a newcomer? By doing things just a little bit differently. Quantified could easily have chosen for a ‘grey box design’ but decided they wanted something more recognizable. A product that breathes the quality and authority of the brand. To achieve this Groen & Boothman developed and engineered a daring and elegant design that catches the eyes of their prospects, on the table and out in the field. We designed and developed the FireFly and a clever multi-functional mounting clip for attaching the sensors in various situations.Inspiration from the garden for the FireFly agricultural sensor
Keeping in mind that these sensors are used mainly amongst plants and animals, our inspiration came from the garden. To work, arrays of sensors are placed in strategic locations throughout fields and greenhouses. In this way, we imagined the sensors as living organisms themselves, busy at work, sensing and taking care of plant life.
We gave the innovative design of the FireFly a friendly shape with details reminiscent of insects and leaves. Working with translucent materials and cleverly detailed 3D printed elements gives the sensors a gentle yet futuristic look. The 3D printed elements have a technical function as well as provide possibilities for future customization using generated patterns. We also designed a multi-functional mounting clip for easily attaching and positioning the sensors in a variety of situations. In this project we worked closely with software & hardware designers to achieve our goal.
Clear design solutions Coming from a background in aeronautical engineering we love simple, efficient and effective design solutions. For the Quantified climate sensors we designed a clip to easily mount the sensors to the existing cables and rods commonly used in agricultural applications. The solution was found in an easy to adjust low-cost clip which is cut and bent from only one piece of sheet metal which holds the sensor by friction.
