Foldable SmartBag for Everless
A reusable shopping bag that folds into a credit-card-sized case
Everless asked us to design a stylish, reusable shopping bag that could fold quickly and easily into an ultra-compact case, small enough to fit in a pocket or handbag.
The challenge was to create a product that felt simple in daily use, but was based on a smart technical principle. The SmartBag had to be strong, lightweight and practical, while also giving Everless a distinctive product on which to build their brand.
The result is a foldable shopping bag that offers a sustainable alternative to disposable plastic bags. Compact when stored, generous when opened, and clean enough to carry as part of everyday life.
Designed through folding, fabric and detail
The project started with a deep dive into origami techniques. By studying how flat surfaces can fold into compact volumes, we developed the folding pattern that forms the basis of the SmartBag.
This pattern was translated into a lightweight technical fabric and programmed into the material using heat-setting techniques. The fabric, folding lines, case and details were developed together, so the bag could collapse naturally into a compact shape without becoming difficult to use.
The design combines soft goods know-how with a hands-on development process. Through mock-ups, prototypes and close collaboration with suppliers, the SmartBag became more than a clever idea: it became a refined, manufacturable product.
Groen Boothman developed the concept for the foldable SmartBag and translated Everless’ ambition into a clear product direction.
We researched folding principles, new textiles and material textures, and developed the technical setup of the bag, including the folding pattern, fabric behaviour, case logic and construction details.
Our role covered design development, technical detailing, prototype building and realisation. We worked hands-on with mock-ups, materials and suppliers to bring the SmartBag from concept to a working, manufacturable product.
