Creatures Bracelet Series
A new approach to design for mass customization
The Creatures bracelet series is the result of a design study into new forms, textures and tactile qualities for the luxury industry. The project explores how algorithmic design can be used to create objects that feel natural, personal and highly refined.
Rather than designing one fixed bracelet, we developed a generative process. Each cuff is captured from a moving digital form, as if a moment in an animation is frozen and turned into a physical object.
The result is a series of lightweight, sculptural wearables. Each piece is unique, but still belongs to the same design family.
Captured from motion
The Creatures are generated from a master shape that is deformed by computer-generated waves. These waves move through the form, changing its structure, rhythm and surface.
At selected moments, the motion is frozen. That still frame becomes the basis for a unique cuff.
This approach creates shapes that are difficult to design by hand. The forms feel organic and almost natural, with a tactile surface language that sits somewhere between skin, shell, textile and skeleton.
One-off objects, digitally generated
Each Creature is a one-of-one object. No two pieces are the same, but they are all created from the same underlying design system.
This makes the project a study in mass customization at form level. The variation is not added afterwards as decoration, but built into the design and production logic itself.
The project also explores the changing role of the designer. Algorithms can generate endless variation, but the designer still defines the system, sets the direction, selects the right moments and turns digital complexity into a refined physical object.
“It is almost perverse that mathematicians have spent centuries contemplating idealized shapes like straight lines or perfect circles and yet have no proper or systematic way to describe the rough and imperfect shapes that dominate the real world.”
Groen Boothman developed the concept for the Creatures Cuff series as a study into new textures, generated form and tactile luxury objects.
We researched how algorithmic movement could be translated into wearable shapes, using generative design techniques to create both the structure and the surface language of the cuffs.
We developed the design, refined the generated forms and realised the pieces physically through digital production and hand-finishing.
